Suzuki Has A Plan For ASEAN Markets And It Starts Now

Suzuki Japan’s strategy for ASEAN markets pivots on transforming Indonesia into its core regional supply base and leveraging India as a massive export hub for Southeast Asia.

Moving away from local manufacturing in markets like Thailand, the brand relies on highly localised hybrid models and new electric vehicles (EVs).

Suzuki has utilised Indonesia as its core ASEAN base, investing over Rp 1 trillion (approx. USD61 million) to localise production of models like the Suzuki hybrid powered Fronx.

To maximise cost-efficiency, Suzuki is exporting its major new models, including the first global EV, the e Vitara which was just launched in Malaysia for RM188,000 directly from India into ASEAN countries while also deploying long-term warranty upgrades for existing models like the Fronx and Jimny.

Built on Suzuki’s lightweight HEARTECT platform, the Fronx features a compact footprint and tight turning radius, making it ideal for navigating narrow city streets and tight parking garages.

Originally developed by Suzuki’s Indian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki, it was engineered as a competitive, value-for-money B-segment SUV.

It was built to satisfy the demand for economical daily driving, utilizing a mild-hybrid powertrain for enhanced energy efficiency.

The Fronx was created to suit multiple international markets, offering variants ranging from standard petrol to all-wheel drive (AWD) depending on the region.

Powered by a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine (with an Integrated Starter-Generator) and a 12-volt lithium-ion battery, it provides smooth city driving and an outstanding estimated range of over 700 km on a single tank.

While originally imported as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) unit from Indonesia with a higher entry price, local distributor Naza Eastern Motors later adjusted the Fronx’s pricing to make it more competitive, dropping the base model to RM118,888 and introducing a more aggressive Fronx Sport bodykit variant.
