Can You Buy And Drive A New Defender Diesel In Malaysia
You need to be very careful with the new Defender Diesel Engine.
Let us explain further. There is NO diesel-powered Defender in the Malaysian Land Rover showroom for sale for a very good reason. If you have seen advertisements for the Land Rover Defender 110 D240 at an attractive selling price, please do a little research before committing.
After talking to the management at Land Rover Malaysia and their after sales people, it is clear that a 2020 model Defender Diesel is forbidden fruit for Malaysians.
Some information first. The Land Rover Defender’s 2.0-liter turbo-diesel I-4 powertrain which was available in both 197hp and also a 237hp tune was replaced with a brand new engine from Jaguar Land Rover powertrain engineering department.
This is a brand new 3.0-liter twin-turbo-diesel mild-hybrid inline-six diesel that is tuned to deliver 197hp with the D200 variant or 247hp with the D250 variant or an impressive 296hp in the D300 variant.
All three variants have been selling well in Europe where Euro6 diesel is easily available. So, with NO Euro6 diesel available in all fuel station in Malaysia, buying and owning a diesel powered Land Rover Defender in Malaysia will be short lived and with many problems after a few fill-ups with our lower quality diesel. Even with the best quality Euro5 diesel from BHPetrol, this new award winning Defender diesel engines will suffer slowly but surely.
As a number of reconditioned car importers (AP) start importing and selling this new diesel powered Defenders in Malaysia without having the adequate knowledge, there will be buyers thinking they can visit a Jaguar Land Rover authorized service center to get their diesel Defenders fixed or even claim warranty. This will NOT be allowed as they are not official cars and also, the factory will not honor a diesel Defender that has been using Malaysian grade Euro5 diesel.
So, if you see advertisements like this, please understand what it means to use lower quality diesel to run your RM600k SUV and also note that AP reconditioned car dealers give you warranties that are NOT factory warranty and they have no links or agreement with Jaguar Land Rover.
Plus, the warranty offered is probably NOT worth the paper it is printed on as we have seen with many reconditioned car buyers taking the plunge to buy Electric Cars from these dealers and soon after their shiny fast and technology filled Electric Cars are ‘broken down’ and ‘stuck’ without any possible repair or restart.
So, visit Sime Darby Motors and their Land Rover showroom to get a better understanding before committing a lot of money on a used 2020 model diesel Defender that might not last even a year under your hands.
