Isuzu D-MAX 2.2 Aims to Loop Peninsular Malaysia on a Single Tank of Diesel

Isuzu Malaysia has launched the D-MAX One-Tank. One Nation challenge, testing the extreme real-world efficiency of its new 2.2-litre turbo diesel pick-up truck.

Flagged off from the Isuzu 3S Centre in Balakong, Selangor, the six-day endurance drive will see the D-MAX attempt to complete a comprehensive loop around Peninsular Malaysia on just one tank of fuel. The planned route navigates across key transit corridors and dealer checkpoints across Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang, Kelantan, Kedah, and Perak before concluding back in Kuala Lumpur.

New 2.2-Litre Ddi MaxForce Engine and 8-Speed Automatic Transmission

The fuel-efficiency trial serves as a technical showcase for Isuzu’s updated powertrain architecture, which replaces the outgoing 1.9-litre unit while offering broader torque and improved transmission gearing. Check out our review of this new D-Max configuration here.

Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia, Kenichi Kudo, emphasized that the 2.2-litre engine possesses ideal characteristics for long-distance efficiency challenges. A core mechanical highlight of the new powerplant is its low-end torque delivery, where 56% of maximum torque (producing over 250 Nm) is already accessible from just 1,000 rpm.

Paired with a new 8-speed automatic gearbox, the revised gearing enables brisk low-speed acceleration while keeping engine revs low at highway cruising speeds to drastically reduce extra-urban fuel consumption. Across the full rev range, the 2.2-litre engine outputs 163 PS and 400 Nm of torque, delivering a strong balance of pulling capability and operational frugality.

Nationwide Dealership Stops and Fan Engagement

The journey will be documented throughout the six-day expedition, featuring regular updates hosted by Isuzu brand ambassador Baki Zainal.

  • Dealer Pit Stops: Baki and the road crew will meet fans and customers at scheduled Isuzu 3S dealership stops along the nationwide route, offering vehicle walkarounds, refreshments, and official giveaways.
  • Public Mileage Contest: Malaysian motorists can participate in an interactive contest by predicting the total distance the D-MAX covers by the time it completes its loop in Kuala Lumpur. The closest guess will win the grand prize of a RM5,000 grocery shopping voucher, alongside secondary prizes for runner-up entries.

Real-time tracking, dealer pit stop schedules, and contest submissions are available directly via Isuzu Malaysia’s official event portal.
